Ikat sarees are a timeless symbol of India’s rich textile heritage, known for their intricate patterns and vibrant colors. The word “ikat” originates from the Malay-Indonesian word “mengikat,” which means “to tie,” reflecting the distinctive tie-and-dye technique used to create these masterpieces.
What makes ikat sarees unique is the process of resist dyeing, where the yarns are carefully tied and dyed before weaving. This labor-intensive technique requires precision and skill, resulting in mesmerizing patterns that appear seamlessly on the fabric.
There are three types of ikat weaving techniques: single ikat, double ikat, and combined ikat. Single ikat involves dyeing either the warp or weft threads, while double ikat is more intricate, with both warp and weft threads dyed to create symmetrical patterns.
